Backup and Recovery are the daily, weekly or monthly processes of backing up important business data and storing it safely in the event that for any reason the data needs to be restored or recovered.

Many organisations tackle this process internally by backing up to tapes, however as the data volumes have increased in size the time taken means that this has become a major problem for IT deptartments. As typically 1 in 10 backup or restores fail this puts the business at risk. In additionthe complexity of managing the large number of tapes can create further problems if the data needs to be recovered quickly.

Replication & DR

Backup & Recovery is often a key element in the Business Continuance and Disaster Recovery planning that many organisations have, however, for true DR the data and the systems needed to run the business application need to be already in place at a second backup site which is geographically separated from the main site.

This is where replication technology moves the backup process on a stage further by taking regular snapshots of the primary business data and then copying that data accross a wide area network to the secondary data site. Replication rather than backup can mean 'Zero data loss for key applications such as financcial transactions. Now small business users can get the benefit of replication on very modest budgets!
